York County casino advocates hoping for 2017 vote

Advocates for a third Maine casino, to be in York County, submitted petitions to the Maine Secretary of State’s Office seeking a statewide referendum vote in November 2017.

The Press Herald reported that the group calling itself Horseracing Jobs Fairness had delivered 19,000 petitions containing more than 65,000 signatures to the Secretary of State last Thursday. It’s the group’s second attempt to get on the ballot. In March, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced that only 36,000 of the more than 91,000 signatures submitted by petitioners in its first try could be validated — far short of the 61,123 validated signatures that were required to be placed on this year’s ballot.

The group needs at least 61,123 signatures to be certified as valid in order to appear on the ballot in November 2017, the newspaper reported.

The Secretary of State’s Office has until Jan. 21 to complete its certification of the submitted petitions.
