Maine's largest solar farm prepares to power up

Ohio-based ISG Energy expects its 5-megawatt solar energy farm in Madison to be online by the end of this week or early in the new year.

The Waterville Sentinel reported that the project in the Madison Business Gateway is the state’s largest solar farm and is expected to supply electricity to as many as 3,000 homes and small businesses that are customers of Madison Electric Works, a municipally run power company.

Madison Electric Works Superintendent Calvin Ames told the newspaper that the utility had signed a 26-year agreement with ISG to purchase the solar-generated electricity at a fixed rate of 7.99 cents per kilowatt. Ames also noted that after six years, the utility would have the opportunity to purchase the solar farm for about $6 million.

The $10 million solar farm consists of about 26,000 solar panels and occupies nearly 22 acres of land in the Madison Business Gateway, the newspaper reported.
