Pingree: Time to 'hop' on the craft beer train

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is urging Congress to provide more research money to study a key ingredient in craft beer, hops.

WLBZ 2 reports that the rapid growth of craft brewing has created more demand for hops — and that, in turn, could help Maine farmers.

“The demand for hops nationally is far outstripping supply,” Sean Sullivan, executive director of the Maine Brewers Guild, told Mainebiz.

Pingree’s action, which reportedly has support from 100 members of Congress, points to the growing significance of craft beer in Maine and elsewhere.

“It’s been amazing growth. I think it’s about a half-a-billion-dollar industry, which is getting close to the lobster fishing industry and we think of that as the giant of the state,” Pingree told the station.
