New time zone for Maine?

Short days are the bane of winter.

Now the Legislature’s Committee on State and Local Government is looking at a measure to shift Maine into a new time zone so that the winter sun sets an hour later.

The Sun Journal reported the shift could improve economic opportunities and lessen energy consumption, according to sponsors.

The committee endorsed the idea in 2005, but it never went further, the newspaper reported. Federal law allows states to decide for themselves whether to participate in daylight saving time. Shifting to a different zone requires approval from Congress or the U.S. Department of Transportation.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled at the State House for Feb. 1, the newspaper reported.
