Lincoln County planners ponder broadband access

The Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission is considering how to find needed funding to build infrastructure for broadband access and improve prospects for economic development and employment, government services, public safety, health care and education, the Boothbay Register reported.

At a Jan. 19 commission workshop, representatives of Maine’s ConnectME program said grants provided by the program to expand broadband access typically aren’t enough to get an entire project funded, particularly for small communities, where costs rise dramatically.

Planners were presented with an example of a successful ConnectME grant in Waldoboro, where 41% of access costs to much of the north part of the town was funded, with remaining funds coming from other sources such as private and town funds.
