Bar Harbor cruise ship number up for 2017

Bar Harbor continues to become increasingly attractive to the cruise ship industry, and the season is becoming a bit longer, with the town’s busiest season expected this year.

“Right now, we are at 171 ships, and that’s more than we’ve ever had on the schedule prior to season kicking off,” Bar Harbor Harbormaster Charlie Phippen told the Mount Desert Islander.

Last year, 105 cruise ships arrived in town out of the 120 that were originally scheduled.

According to the town’s cruise ship schedule, the first ship arrives April 23 and the last Nov. 1. The ships carry anywhere from 170 to more than 4,000 passengers. That’s topped off with crew of anywhere from 25 to more than 2,000.

Portland is the state's second-busiest cruise ship port. A report by the Cruise Lines International Association noted cruise ship companies and passengers contributed $47 million directly to Maine's economy in 2014, in addition to providing 755 jobs to residents.
