Demolition begins at GNP mill in East Millinocket

Demolition work at the former Great Northern Paper Co. mill in East Millinocket began this week.

The Bangor Daily News reported that North American Recovery Management, based in Boca Raton, Fla., received a permit on Feb. 1 from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to proceed with the $1.3 million demolition of several buildings at the paper mill, which closed in 2014 after operating for over 100 years.

The Florida company, which specializes in demolishing out-of-date properties, purchased the GNP mill for an undisclosed amount in March 2016 from Hackman Capital Partners of Los Angeles, which had bought the Great Northern Mill's assets for $5.4 million in December 2014.

Town officials told the BDN they were concerned the demolition of the buildings would deter an unnamed potential developer, but acknowledged there wasn’t much they could do to stop North American Recovery Management from proceeding with its plans.
