Bangor airport makes $34K emergency computer upgrade

Bangor International Airport, shown in this aerial view, recently made an emergency $34,540 purchase of three new computers for its 10-year-old computer system that controls more than 1,000 airfield lights.
Last year Bangor International Airport received $1,129,300 in Federal Aviation Administration investment to install a new passenger loading bridge for its domestic terminal building, as part of the FAA’s total expenditures at airports throughout the state.
But that didn’t prevent BIA from recently needing to make an emergency $34,540 purchase of three new computers for its 10-year-old computer system that controls more than 1,000 airfield lights, the Bangor Daily News reported.
In a memo to the city, Airport Director Tony Caruso described the old system as unstable and likely vulnerable to cyberattack.
Airport workers first became aware of the system’s instability when a computer monitor in the airport’s tower began to dim, Robbie Beaton, director of airport operations, told the BDN.
