Chlorine leak at Baileyville mill sends several people to hospital

A leak of toxic chlorine dioxide at the Woodland Pulp mill in Baileyville affected 16 contractors and two employees, sending several to the hospital.

A statement from the company indicated there was a brief release of the gas due to a lack of ventilation of equipment being worked on during a planned maintenance outage, the  Bangor Daily News reported. The situation was quickly corrected, allowing the maintenance project to resume.

According to the company’s website, Woodland Mill produces St. Croix Hardwood, a premium Northern ECF bleached Kraft pulp manufactured using hardwood chips from Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, for the production of high-end paper grades, including coated paper grades, machine glazed, carbonless, and  bond and copy paper. The company’s pulp is sold to paper makers worldwide.
