Maine Restaurant Association names award winners

The Maine Restaurant Association has selected Jonathan West, owner of Jonathan’s Restaurant in Ogunquit, for the honor of restaurateur of the year for 2017. West is celebrating 40 years in the business.

Other winners are:

  • Joshua Berry, of Union Restaurant in the Press Hotel in Portland, was named chef of the year for “his creative menu served in a beautiful and elegant setting.”
  • Cheryl Lee Rust, owner of the popular Le Garage Restaurant in Wiscasset for 40 years, received the “Bill Zoidis Lifetime Achievement Award.” Rust, who plans to close the restaurant on April 30, was honored not only for her restaurant but also for her volunteer work in mental health.  The award is named after Bill Zoidis, the manager of the Pilots Grill in Bangor for 50 years, who died last year.
  • Performance Food Service of Augusta was named allied member of the year. Leaders of the company have served on the association’s board for more than three decades. The company supports many initiatives, especially in education where they are one of the leading sponsors of ProStart, MeRA’s program that trains high school students for careers in hospitality.

The awards dinner was held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland on March 28.

The awards are given annually for contributions to the restaurant industry in Maine.
