Verizon outsourcing its retail jobs in Waterville

Verizon laid off all of its employees at its retail store in Waterville on Thursday as part of a plan to outsource the work to an independent retailer.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the abrupt layoffs, which one Waterville employee told the newspaper occurred when workers showed up for work Thursday, took place a week after Verizon shut down its call center in Bangor.

The BDN reported that David Weissmann, Verizon public relations manager for the northeast market, declined to say how many employees were affected but said they were offered jobs elsewhere or a severance package.

“The Waterville store is transitioning from a Verizon Wireless store to an authorized retailer location,” Weissmann told the newspaper. ““When the transition is complete the store will be staffed by the independent retailer.”
