Report pegs economic impact of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at $756 million

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery had a total economic impact of $756 million in 2016, according to a report released by the Seacoast Shipyard Association.
According to The Associated Press, the advocacy group’s annual report for the shipyard pegged its civilian payroll at $496 million for 6,329 civilian jobs in 2016. The military payroll for Navy and Coast Guard personnel was $43 million.

The report noted that 3,597 of the workers are from Maine and 2,266 are from New Hampshire. The economic impact and civilian employment both grew about 3% to 3.5% from 2015 figures, the AP reported.
U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., told the AP the report confirms the shipyard “is not only critical to our national security, but is also a vital economic engine for the Seacoast [region].”
