Patients’ personal data hacked from Bangor mental health practice

Behavorial Health Center in Bangor is the latest Maine health organization to report being hacked, or targeted by phone scammers seeking patients’ confidential information as two Maine hospitals have reported in the past month.

Bangor Daily News reported that the outpatient mental health practice is investigating the illegal hacking of patient records and possible sale of its clients’ confidential information to an anonymous bidder.

The health center is assessing the extent of the breach, including what patient information was accessed and how many clients are potentially at risk, David Farmer, a spokesman for the practice, told the newspaper.

Farmer told the BDN the health center learned about the breach in March from a website that tracks and reports hacking incidents. The website reported someone was trying to sell patient data — allegedly including names, addresses and Social Security numbers — for at least $10,000.

The newspaper reported that the health center has contacted the FBI about the incident.
