Portland-based law firm Pierce Atwood LLP has beefed up its intellectual property and patent practices with four new attorney hires in three offices.

Kevin M. Farrell, the Portsmouth-based partner who chairs the firm’s patent practice group, told Mainebiz that the additions “substantially increase our depth in the electronic patents space, which adds to our already robust life sciences practice.”

“This positions us to expand our roster of regional, national and international clients,” he added.

The firm has added partners Robert Abrahamsen in Portland, previously with Wolf Greenfield & Sacks, P.C. in Boston; and Ilan Barzilay in Boston, previously with Seyfarth Shaw LLP.

The two are actually good friends, having both worked at Wolf Greenfield before Barzilay left for Seyfarth Shaw in 2010.

“We make a great team and it’s fantastic to be working together again,” Abrahamsen said.

Like Barzilay, the two new associates come from Seyfarth Shaw: Christopher Baxter and Cyrus Miller, both now with Pierce Atwood in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Abrahamsen said that being at a smaller firm offers more opportunities to grow his own patent prosecution practice.

“Due to the sheer size of the technology practice group I was in and the existence of several clients with very broad portfolios, the conflict footprint was quite large,” he said. He said he also looks forward to spending more time with his family in the greater Portland area “while still having ready access to office space in Boston and elsewhere to meet client needs.”

Abrahamsen has extensive experience preparing and prosecuting domestic and foreign patent applications, primarily concerning innovations in the electronic, software and mechanical arts. Barzilay’s intellectual property experience includes portfolio management, opinions, licensing, trademarks and copyrights.

Pierce Atwood, led by managing partner David Barry, employs 79 attorneys in Portland, 47 in Boston, 18 in Portsmouth, 12 in Providence, seven in Washington, D.C., and five in Augusta.

The firm celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2016.
