Maine Medical Center is considering changing the location of a planned $70 million, 13-story parking garage that’s part of its overall $512 million expansion.

The Portland Press Herald reported that hospital officials are looking at alternative locations to address neighborhood concerns about the new 1,200-space garage’s height and scale in the proposed location, at the corner of Gilman and Congress streets in Portland’s West End. The hospital also could decide, in the end, to stick with the current configuration of the parking garage in relation to the overall project.

MMC is the state's largest medical center, licensed for 637 beds and employing nearly 6,500 people. It announced its $512 million expansion last fall, reporting at that time that it would include a 270,000-square-foot building, 128 private rooms, 20 universal procedure rooms, the parking garage and expanded outpatient services but retain the same number of hospital beds as present.

The project requires state and local approvals. The expected completion date is 2022.
