Lawsuit faults weather forecasting company in El Faro’s sinking
A weather forecasting services and support company called StormGeo is the target of a lawsuit that says a version of StormGeo’s forecasting software is to blame for the sinking of El Faro.
Five Maine Maritime Academy graduates, including the captain, were among the 33 people who died when the cargo ship sank during Hurricane Joaquin, in October 2015.
WGME reported that several insurance companies have filed suit in Florida federal court, alleging StormGeo’s Bon Voyage System version 7, used by El Faro, "provided delayed, inaccurate and misleading information” about the vessel’s position, leading Capt. Michael Davidson to sail into the hurricane.
The lawsuit seeks $7 million for the value of lost goods.
