Lewiston: Historic district could boost economic development

The creation of a historic district in downtown Lewiston could be a good thing for economic development, a city official said in light of a current redevelopment project.

The Sun Journal reported that the discussion was prompted when the owner of the former Marcotte Furniture building, on Lisbon Street, sought to use historic preservation tax credits to renovate the structure for apartments and commercial space.

The district would encompass 85 buildings, 65 of which would most likely be eligible for historic register status, making them eligible for the tax credits as well.

"The district makes a lot of sense," Lincoln Jeffers, director of economic and community development, said during a city council meeting. "A very good thing for economic development."
