Portland restaurant Zapoteca closes

High-profile chef Shannon Bard has closed her Portland restaurant Zapoteca after six years.

Bard told the Bangor Daily News she was unable to give the restaurant and staff her full attention, and the quality and experience slipped. She also owns two restaurants in Kennebunk, a events barn, which she caters, and a cooking school.

Workforce shortages and Portland’s competitive food scene were also factors in the closure, but the primary factor was missing out on her children’s lives, she told the BDN.

“It’s a business decision and a lifestyle decision,” Bard said.

Bard has appeared on the TV shows “Beat Bobby Flay”  and “Kitchen Inferno.”

Bard and her husband, Tom Bard, opened her Kennebunk enterprises in 2016. They include a Spanish restaurant named Toroso, a ground-floor venue called Salud Bistro, a cooking school, market and catering company on several floors, and an events barn behind the main building.
