Aroostook Beef gets into retail to expand reach

The owners of the Aroostook Beef Co. in New Canada are opening a retail operation in Fort Kent to expand their customer base.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Erin Parisien and Richard Nielsen raise prime black angus cattle and have been selling meat directly to customers from their home and at local farmers markets.

Parisien told the BDN that opening a store was a bit of a risk, but the popularity of local food would make it worthwhile. The meat will be more expensive than that found in a chain supermarket.

“It’s been a bit of a struggle to get people to realize local beef is going to be superior to what they get at a grocery store with commercial beef, but they are beginning to figure that out,” Parisien said.
