Saco Island targeted for $40 million development

Developer Bernie Saulnier is putting together a $40 million mixed-use project for the east side of Saco Island, but city officials are advising him to seek community input before he submits formal plans to the city’s planning board.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Saulnier Development team hopes to start the approval and permitting process this fall, with a goal of beginning construction by next spring or summer, on a project that would include apartments, a hotel, a restaurant and two marinas.

Saco Economic Development Director William Mann characterized Saulnier’s plans as “a very significant project.”

“It’s one of our gateways,” he told the newspaper. “Given the size and scale, it will get a lot of interest from the community.”

Saulnier, a third-generation builder with a number of projects in Massachusetts and Maine, told the newspaper that Saco Island appealed to him as a development site for its sweeping views of the Saco River, its proximity to Portland, Kennebunkport and Boston and its accessibility to the downtowns of Biddeford and Saco.
