Hire-A-Vet campaign seeks school bus drivers

The state’s Department of Education and Department of Labor have joined forces to recruit veterans to fill the shortage of bus drivers, mechanics and diesel engine specialists throughout the state’s school districts.

The Sun Journal reported the Labor Department’s Hire-A-Vet campaign, kicking off on Labor Day, will offer free training.

Education Department Transportation and Facilities Administrator Pat Hinckley told the paper that reaching out to veterans makes sense because they often have diverse backgrounds that include transportation, security, safety, mechanics, heavy equipment, teamwork and attention to detail.

“School transportation offers an opportunity for veterans to transition from serving their country to serving their community,” Hinckley said.

“Through this outreach we can help connect veterans with jobs like this, where there is a statewide need,” Julie Rabinowitz, director of policy, operations and communication at the Department of Labor, told the paper.
