Five names make shortlist for future Portland hockey team

The Portland Puffins, Lumberjacks, Wild Blueberries, Watchmen or Mariners?

Out of more than 3,800 entries submitted, those are the five finalists for the name of the future Portland hockey team, Portland Hockey LLC announced on Thursday.

Now it's up to the public to vote in an online poll.

The person whose name suggestion ends up winning will receive four season tickets to the inaugural season and a team-signed jersey, and get to take part in the opening-night ceremonial puck drop.

Portland, which has been without a pro hockey team since May 2016, will welcome the Alaska Aces — under a new moniker — for the 2018-19 season. They will play at the Cross Insurance Arena.

Mainebiz reported in June that the ECHL, formerly the East Coast Hockey League, approved the transfer of a controlling interest in the Alaska team to Comcast Spectacor, a Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment company, and a transfer of the team's home territory to Portland.

The Alaska Aces played 15 seasons at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage until they folded last year for financial reasons. Their new owner hopes to give them a new life — and fan base — in Portland.
