Bangor-area businesses reach out to help Texas flood victims

Bangor area businesses are teaming up to collect funds to help victims of widespread flooding in Texas following Hurricane Harvey.

Spearheaded by Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications, the participating businesses are encouraging people to donate their bottle and can redemption money between now and Sept. 5 at the Bangor Redemption and Beverage Center. The participating businesses have pledged to match those donations 100%.

“The images coming out of Texas right now are heartbreaking,” Elizabeth Sutherland of Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications, said in a news release. “Our employees all wanted to help in some way, and we believe if everyone is able to give a little, it will add up to a donation that can make a real difference. We have relationships with a number of businesses in Eastern Maine who also want to help, so we’re all pulling together to offer a matching donation for all bottles and cans designated toward this effort at Bangor Redemption and Beverage Center over the next week.”

People wishing to contribute can bring their returnable bottles and cans to Bangor Redemption and Beverage Center at 490 Broadway in Bangor between now and Sept. 5 and indicate that their redemption money can be put toward disaster relief funds for Texas. On Sept. 5, the total amount will be revealed and participating businesses will contribute to match the funds, thereby doubling the redemption money’s impact.

The businesses involved are: Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications; Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway; Hartt Transportation; Changing Seasons Federal Credit Union; C&L Aviation Group; Epstein Commercial Real Estate; Epstein Properties; Eaton Peabody; Penobscot McCrum; Bangor International Airport and city of Bangor employees; ANM Properties; Dysarts; ERA Dawson-Bradford; Means Wealth Management.

“All of the businesses involved are not only contributing money toward the match, but helping to spread the word through their own social media channels, newsletters, outreach, and employees as well,” said Sutherland. “Maine is full of people who give back, and helping people impacted by this disaster is no exception. We’re just doing our part to help where it is needed.”

Those who would like to donate bottles and cans, but cannot make it to Bangor Redemption and Beverage Center before next Tuesday can call Sutherland Weston at (207) 945-9999 to try and make arrangements for returnables to be collected at alternative sites.
