Netflix CEO’s $5M gift to help under-served Bowdoin students

Netflix CEO and Bowdoin College graduate Reed Hastings has donated $5 million to his alma mater in Brunswick for a new program to improve graduation rates of students who are low-income, first-generation or traditionally under-represented.

Hastings, a member of Bowdoin College’s Class of 1983, co-founded Netflix in 1997 as a mail order DVD rental company. It is now one of the leading companies in online video distribution, with 104 million members in over 190 countries.

The Times Record reported that the THRIVE program “offers comprehensive academic programming as well as support and skills development for participating students prior to matriculation.”

“We need to ensure that Bowdoin is the place where these students have the kind of comprehensive experience that allows them to excel here and to graduate on time, ready to pursue full and rewarding lives and careers,” Bowdoin College President Clayton Rose said in a news release.

Hastings will join the THRIVE Advisory Group.
