Lucas St. Clair, president of Elliotsville Plantation Inc. and the newly formed Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters, announced today his candidacy as a Democrat in Maine's Congressional District. He joins four other Democrats in the June primary field who are seeking to unseat two-term incumbent Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine.

Lucas St. Clair announced his candidacy today as a Democrat in Maine's 2nd Congressional District. He joins four other Democrats in the June primary field who are seeking to unseat two-term incumbent Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine.

The Bangor Daily News reported that St. Clair — the 39-year-old son of Burt's Bees entrepreneur Roxanne Quimby and the president of Elliotsville Plantation, the nonprofit that gave to the United States the 87,500 acres that became Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument — was launching his candidacy and campaign website today. He also is president of the national monument's advocacy group, Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters. He has never held elected office.

St. Clair will be running in the Democratic primary against: Assistant House Majority Leader Jared Golden of Lewiston; Jonathan Fulford of Monroe, a carpenter and plumber who twice ran unsuccessfully for the Maine Senate seat currently held by Senate President Mike Thibodeau, R-Winterport; Philip Cleaves Jr., Craig Olson and Timothy Rich, the BDN reported.

St. Clair, who grew up in District 2 but has been living in Portland, plans to move to Hampden to meet the residency requirement, the BDN reported.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story failed to include Craig Olson as one of the five Democrats St. Clair will be running against in the June Democratic primary.
