Boothbay’s Route 27 roundabout revitalization almost done
A roundabout on Route 27 in Boothbay is nearing completion and other building projects in that vicinity are in the works.
The Boothbay Register reported that investor Paul Coulombe purchased much of the nearby real estate along Route 27 near the roundabout, including the former Clipper Mart for $1.8 million, and is renovating the mart, which will be called the Boothbay Village Market. The project included removing soil contaminated with oil and gases, replacing signs and lighting, and installing landscaping and a newly paved parking lot.
“I didn’t really want to buy it,” Coulombe told the paper, of the mart. “I just wanted to clean it up and create the new entrance to the community.”
Coulombe also joined the town and the Maine Department of Transportation in paying for the Route 27 project.
Another project Coulombe has in the works is a new building next to Boothbay Common, with two large public restrooms and a parking lot. And he’s received approval from the Boothbay Civic Association to install a skating rink at the common, pending approval by the town. Construction of a fitness pavilion at Coulombe’s Boothbay Harbor Country Club is anticipated to be completed in May.
Coulombe, a Lewiston native, sold his Pinnacle Vodka and Calico Jack brands to Beam Inc. for $605 million in 2012. He has since invested $150 million of his own money in two golf resorts, five B&Bs, a lighthouse and other real estate in the Boothbay region. He made a substantial investment in his own home on nearby Southport Island.
