Systems Engineering, a Portland-based IT strategy and managed services provider, announced today that Craig Tribuno, president of the employee-owned company since 2013, will now assume the role of CEO and chairman of the board.

Tribuno’s promotion is one of several changes to System Engineering’s senior leadership team approved by the board of directors earlier this month. In his new role Tribuno will focus on business growth and community engagement.

Matt McGrath, the company’s director of engineering for the last three years, has been promoted to president. As the company’s third president in its nearly 30-year history, McGrath will be responsible for leading Systems Engineering strategically and operationally.

John Sterling, previously with CashStar Inc., joined Systems Engineering on Oct. 16 to take on the director of engineering role previously held by McGrath and to serve on the company’s leadership team.

Earlier this summer, Eric Tennyson joined the company from WEX Inc. as director of finance and administration, a new role on the senior leadership team.

“Since joining Systems Engineering four years ago, Matt McGrath has provided strong leadership, navigated all manner of client situations, and demonstrated that he is capable and highly qualified to serve as our new President,” Tribuno, CEO and chairman of the Board of Systems Engineering, said in a news release. “I know he is the right person to lead Systems Engineering through our next stages of growth.”

Success and growth

Tribuno joined Systems Engineering in 1998 as vice president and chief operating officer 10 years after the company was founded. During his tenure, the company grew from 17 employees to 150 employees and opened its first office outside of Maine.

In 2008, Tribuno led System’s Engineering’s transition from a 20-year privately held business to a 100% employee-owned company, a move that was intended to motivate and reward employees for their commitment to the company’s mission and its customers. Employee retention has averaged 90% since 2011. In 2013, Tribuno was promoted to president of the company.

“Systems Engineering has experienced significant growth, doubling in size to 150 employees in the last five years,” said Matt McGrath said the leadership changes were driven, in part, by the company’s significant growth in the last five years, doubling in size to 150 employees.

“With that growth have come opportunities and challenges,” he said. “Over the past year, it became increasingly clear that we needed to deepen our leadership bench to meet the needs of our clients and our employee owners. Today’s senior leadership changes will allow Systems Engineering to accelerate growth for the long-term benefit of our employee-owners and ESOP participants, while never losing sight of our commitment and focus on providing our clients superior engineering and excellent customer service.”

Other members of the senior leadership team are: Todd Molloy, director of sales and marketing; Adam Victor, director of advisory services; Jim Woolverton, director of managed services; Mark Benton, director of product management; and John Sterling, director of engineering.
