It's 'snake eyes' for York casino proposal

Question 1, a proposal to build a casino in York County, was defeated Tuesday with  17% voting “yes” and 83% voting “no,” according results reported by the Portland Press Herald based on 90% of the state’s precincts reporting.

Casino developer Shawn Scott, who under Question 1’s wording would have been the only one able to develop the casino, expressed disappointment in the outcome at a gathering of supporters in Portland Tuesday night.

“I want to thank everyone for joining in what we thought, and still believe, is a great project for Maine,” he said, according to the Portland Press Herald.

A Bad Deal for Maine, a political action committee that opposed the casino, was outspent 15-1 by Question 1’s supporters, which spent over $10 million, including $4.3 million just to qualify for the ballot, making it the most expensive ballot initiative in Maine history, according to Maine Public

Roy Lenardson, a spokesman for the anti-casino PAC, told the Press Herald the results were gratifying.

“We’ve heard a lot lately about voters being tricked by ballot questions, but this is vindication of the Maine voter,” he said. “As much as I would like to take credit for this, it’s a case of democracy working. Everybody did their job, from the governor to the Legislature to the (Maine) ethics commission to the media, who dove into this story. Voters got the information they needed and they made a good decision.”
