Veteran health care leader named CEO of Maine Health Management Coalition

Courtesy / Maine Health Management Coaltion Peter Hayes, a principal of Healthcare Solutions and affiliate partner of SKH in Scarborough, brings a 20-year track record of innovation and leadership in strategic health benefits design to his new position as president and CEO of Maine Health Management Coalition.

The Maine Health Management Coalition has hired a veteran health care innovator as its new president and CEO.

Peter Hayes will be taking over the leadership of the Topsham-based nonprofit  on Dec. 4. He replaces Michael DeLorenzo, who has served as the interim CEO since Andrew Webber's resignation and departure from the organization in June 2016.

MHMC’s 70-plus members include public and private purchasers of health care such as Bath Iron Works, hospitals, health plans and doctors — all working together to achieve the triple aim of improving people’s health and their experience of care as well as reducing the cost of care and commercial health care premiums in Maine to no higher than the national average.

A graduate of Bowdoin College, Hayes comes to the MHMC from Healthcare Solutions, a Scarborough organization he founded in 2009 that provides health-care consulting and strategic planning services to employers, business coalitions, health plans, health systems and professional medical groups.

Prior to founding Healthcare Solutions, Hayes served as the director of associate health and wellness for Hannaford Supermarkets, where he managed a $60 million budget and was charged with implementing innovative strategies to improve employee health and lower costs.

In addition to his professional affiliations, Hayes is a frequent lecturer on health care innovation and business strategies that aim to improve health care value. He has keynoted conferences around the U.S., guest lectured at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business and served on national advisory boards for large companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Castlight Health and others.

“We are very excited to welcome Peter as the new CEO of the Maine Health Management Coalition,” Tom Ellis, chairman of MHMC’s board and the director of total rewards and HR systems at The Jackson Laboratory. “His experience helping purchasers maximize the value of their health-care spend is a great fit for the organization and we’re looking forward to his leadership around this important topic in the Maine purchaser community.”
