SBA holds Aroostook HUBZone workshop

Recent federal changes to the Small Business Administration’s HUBzone program mean that some businesses in Aroostook County qualify for preferences on federal contracts. The SBA is holding a workshop to explain the program to business owners.

The workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Northern Maine Development Commission, 11 West Presque Isle Road in Caribou, and is free and open to the public.

The HUBZone — Historically Underutilized Business Zone  — was designed to encourage economic development in the areas it comprises. It gives preference to qualified companies when bidding on federal contracts, including competitive and sole source contracting, 10% price evaluation preference in full and open contract competitions, as well as subcontracting opportunities. The federal government has a goal of awarding 3% of all dollars for federal prime contracts to businesses in the zones that qualify.

Dana Delano, a business counselor for the Maine Procurement Technical Assistance Center, will also present on what it takes to sell to government entities and opportunities that are available locally and outside the area.
