New MCCS training program to help BIW fill critical jobs

The Maine Community College System will train up to 90 skilled workers for Bath Iron Works, helping the shipbuilder fill critical jobs.

Through a new partnership announced on Wednesday, MCCS Maine Quality Centers program, Southern Maine Community College and BIW will provide training for up to 60 manufacturing technicians and up to 30 welders.

Participants who successfully complete the training will be interviewed for positions at BIW and those who are hired will get additional, job-specific training in BIW’s Trades Learning Center.

BIW, which is owned by General Dynamics, is among Maine’s largest private employers with a workforce of about 5,700.

SMCC’s Workforce Development Department will oversee the training, set to begin in January at SMCC’s Brunswick campus. Last year, the college provided customized skills training to more than 1,350 Maine workers.
