2017 Maine Hire-A-Vet Campaign well above target

Photo / Maine Bureau of Veteran Services Veterans crowded the Augusta Armory in September, talking to more than 140 business owners and other employers who'd set up booths at the job fair launching the state's Hire-a-Vet campaign.

The 2017 Maine-Hire-A-Vet Campaign had led to 217 hires by 147 employers, according to preliminary figures as of Dec. 20.

“We hope to get a few more,” the campaign’s coordinator, Steven Roy, told Mainebiz on Wednesday.

He said the final tally would be released in mid-January, to give employers a chance to report hires being finalized over the holidays. The campaign wrapped up Dec. 13.

Already, the number of hires is more than double the target of getting 100 hires by 100 employers in 100 days. It also exceeds 197 veterans hired in 2016 by 147 employers.

Adria Horn, director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, said in a recent interview that the partnership between the Department of Labor and employers across the state “has hit a new stride this year.” She also said the campaign outreach has been both better and easier, as evidenced by employers participating for a second or third time.

Employers including Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems and Dead River Co., both of whom already have a large number of veterans on their payroll, participated in this year’s campaign.

Maine has close to 117,000 veterans, who account for about 11% of the population, according to the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services.
