Baxter State Park director retiring

Baxter State Park Director Jensen Bissell is retiring after 30 years at the park.

Maine Public reported that Bissell is retiring this week, after 12 years as director of the 210,000-acre park.

During his tenure, Bissell and the Baxter State Park Authority approved a permit system for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers seeking to complete their trek by scaling the summit of Mount Katahdin. Bissell told Maine Public that requests for access will likely increase as the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument attracts more visitors to the region.

The Baxter State Authority will launch a national search for a new director in the new year.
