$10M performance hall on Munjoy Hill awaits final OK

A proposed $10 million, 400-seat performance hall on Portland’s Munjoy Hill is up for final city approval Tuesday, five years after it was first presented.

The Portland Press Herald reported that if the project is approved by the Portland Planning Board, St. Lawrence Arts Center will start raising the $10 million estimated to be needed to construct the performance hall, at 76 Congress St.

St. Lawrence Arts is owned and operated by the nonprofit corporation Friends of the St. Lawrence, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization created in 1996 to restore the historic St. Lawrence Church and return it to use as an arts center. The St. Lawrence has a three-part mission:

  • Arts and culture: Creating an affordable and accessible venue for a diverse offerings of arts including but not limited to theater, dance, music, film, and workshops;
  • Neighborhood and community: Adding activity, entertainment, cultural enrichment, social interaction, renovation and investment that serves both the surrounding neighborhood of Munjoy Hill as well as the residents of Greater Portland.
  • Historic preservation: Rehabilitating alocal and national landmark with the adaptive reuse of an arts center.
