Summit Natural Gas expanding to Sidney

Summit Natural Gas of Maine plans to break ground on an expansion project to Sidney this spring that will bring natural gas to residential and commercial customers in the community, including Pike Industries.

“Pike Industries is continuously looking to expand our energy options,” said Kevin Folkins, energy manager at Pike Industries. “Part of our sustainability strategy is to seek opportunities to optimize our energy use and resources. We are investing in our Sidney plant to reduce the amount of energy required in our production process and are excited to add the ability to use a cleaner fuel.”

For the project, Summit plans to invest over $4.5 million to lay more than 46,000 feet of pipe. Since coming to Maine five years ago, the company has invested more than $340 million to build more than 200 miles of distribution pipe throughout the state. Summit provides natural gas to thousands of residents and most of the schools, colleges, hospitals and municipal buildings in its service areas.

To help lower the cost of converting to natural gas, Summit and the Efficiency Maine Trust are offering rebates and incentives of up to $3,550 for residential homes and up to $6,800 for commercial buildings.

Summit is hosting an educational meeting at the Sidney town office on Wednesday, at 6 p.m., for residents and business owners to learn more about the project.

“We look forward to partnering with the town of Sidney to help strengthen its local economy, while reducing emissions by providing businesses and residents a lower emission fuel alternative,” Skye Austin, Summit’s lead commercial sales representative, said in a news release.
