LePage proposes Washington County pre-release center

The LePage administration is endorsing legislation to build a new pre-release center in Washington County.

Maine Public reported, however, the new center would do little to offset the impact of the closing earlier this year of the Downeast Correctional Facility. Washington County employers have told Maine Public that they have depend on the facility for workers.  The pre-release center would house 20 inmates, whereas the Downeast Correctional Facility held as many as 150.

The facility was shut down Feb. 9, with the Maine Department of Corrections busing inmates to the Mountain View Correctional Facility during pre-dawn hours, WMTW reported at the time. Employees were told they were on paid administrative leave through sometime in March.
