L.L. Bean bans sales of guns or ammo to anyone under 21
L.L.Bean will no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone under age 21, echoing moves by Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Kroger Co. in response to last month’s deadly mass shooting at a Florida high school.
“In the wake of this shooting [we] have reviewed our policy on firearm sales, and we will no longer be selling guns or ammunition to anyone under the age of 21,” L.L. Bean said in a tweet in reply to a Twitter user.
The Freeport-based maker and seller of outdoor clothing and gear explained its policy in response to another social media user, underscoring that it only sells firearms specifically for hunting and only in its Maine store after comprehensive background checks in compliance with state and federal laws.
“We do not sell assault-style firearms, high-capacity firearms, bump stocks or handguns of any kind,” it said on social media.
Dick’s Sporting Goods on Wednesday said it will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age or sell high-capacity magazines, adding that it never has and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.
The same day Walmart, reported to be the country’s biggest gun seller, announced it was raising the age restriction for the purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21 years of age and said it will update its processes “as quickly as possible” to implement the change.
Walmart also said it will remove items from its website resembling assault-style rifles, including non-lethal airsoft guns and toys.
“Our heritage as a company always has been in serving sportsmen and hunters, and we will continue to do so in a responsible way,” it said.
