Lyman-Morse launches new breed of boat

The Anna, a 65-foot daysailer, being launched April 2 from the Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding yard in Thomaston.
Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Inc. in Thomaston launched its latest boat on April 2, a "modern classic sloop" that's designed to be an easy daysailer.
The 65-foot cold-molded wooden boat, named Anna, was designed by Stephens Waring Yacht Design of Belfast. The construction process used modeling software to fine-tune the design while the vessel was under construction, thus creating efficiencies with fewer mistakes and fixes.
According to a Lyman-Morse press release, the company spent the winter and spring of 2016 working with Stephens Waring and with interior designer Martha Coolidge of Martha Coolidge Design in Belfast, together with the owners, to fine-tune the design and construction of 65-foot daysailer.
“As is customary with our custom projects, we built a full-scale mockup of the boat in March 2016, plus an alternative mockup of the master stateroom and guest cabin,” Lyman-Morse stated in its release. “This set-up enabled us to walk through a couple of different layouts of the project to further fine-tune the cockpit and interior layout according to the owners' wishes.”
Lyman-Morse was founded in 1978 by Cabot and Heidi Lyman, and is known for custom construction of high-end yachts, as well as service, storage and refits — combined now with R&D for the aerospace and defense industries, producing oceanographic research equipment and piloting solar energy innovations.
The company also expanded its visibility and services in 2015 when it purchased Wayfarer Marine in Camden.
The Lymans’ son, Drew Lyman, a 2016 Mainebiz Next honoree, has been president of the company since 2012. In 2016, he told Mainebiz that innovation and diversification were key to keeping pace in an industry vulnerable to economic ups and downs.
The 65-foot sailboat was for a first-time customer.
