Auburn retirement community plans $12M expansion
The Schooner Estates retirement community in Auburn will begin development of a $12 million 47,606-square-foot facility this summer.
The Sun Journal reported the new facility will specialize in memory care and assisted living while the current facility will shift to assisted living for residents with fewer needs. The facility will address a growing demand for memory care, John Orestis, the owner of Schooner with his wife, Barbra Crowley, told the newspaper. Schooner Estates currently has 103 full-time-equivalent employees. Orestis anticipates hiring an additional 25. Construction is expected to start in July, with completion in the fall of 2019.
Schooner Estates opened in 1988 with assisted living studio apartments and residential care options.
Soon afterward, due to growing demand for larger independent-living apartments for older adults, 46 one- and two-bedroom apartments were added to the 100-acre campus. Through the 1990s, it added another 58 one- and two-bedroom apartments and a function room for tenants and the community. In 2006 Lewiston/Auburn natives Orestis and Crowley took over and performed indoor and outdoor renovations.
