24 finalists in the running for Maine Family Business Awards

The Institute for Family-Owned Business selected 24 Maine businesses as finalists for the annual Maine Business Awards out of a record 186 nominations.

Winners will be announced at a gala evening event on May 15 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay Portland. The awards are presented in partnership with MEMIC, the Maine-based employee safety insurance group, and the May 15 event will be hosted by News Center Maine anchor Cindy Williams.

This year’s finalists are: Blueberry Fields Bed & Breakfast; Canuvo Inc.; Chewonki Campground; DM&J Waste; Franklin Printing; Green Tree Event Consultants; Green with Envy Salon; Hannington Bros. Inc.; Hardypond Construction; Howe & Howe Technologies; HR Studio Group LLC; Hussey Seating Co.; John T. Cyr & Sons Inc.; Johns Rivers Oysters; Modernist Pantry LLC; Opus Consulting Group; Portland Container Co. Inc.; Rinck Advertising; Ted Berry Co. Inc.; The Holy Donut; The Nonantum Resort; Vena’s Fizz House; Washburn & Doughty Associates Inc. and Woodlands Senior Living.

For purposes of the awards, a family business is defined as “a business wherein one owner either shares ownership or works in the business with at least one other family member (contemporaneously or overtime), and has a commitment to the continuation of the enterprise.

Keynote speakers will be members of the Reny family, owners of department stores in Maine since 1949, with John, Adam and Faustine Reny discussing with Williams on stage about running a successful family business.

  • The evening will kick off with networking and wrap up with presentations of the following awards:
  • Renys Large Business Award (25 or more employees)
  • Chalmers Insurance Group Customer Service Award
  • Holiday Inn By The Bay First Generation Award
  • People's United Bank Innovation & Technology Award
  • Shep Lee Community Service Award
  • Maddy Corson Small Business Award (fewer than 25 employees)
  • Environmental Leadership Award
  • Varney Agency Environmental Leadership Award.

An independent judging panel selects winners based on criteria including the nature of family involvement, the success of the business, the work environment, and innovative business practices or strategies.
