Ellsworth workforce housing development underway
The Developers Collaborative and Manx Development LLC, both in Portland, have work underway on a $4.6 million workforce housing development in Ellsworth.
The Ellsworth American reported the first 18 units of the Oriole Way development, off Washington Street behind Renys, are expected to be finished by this coming September. The final plan calls for a total of 50 units, with rents ranging from $600 to $800 per month. The project is partially financed with $763,790 in tax credits from the Maine State Housing Authority and a tax increment financing plan with the city.
In April, during a general discussion of residential construction in Ellsworth, City Manager David Cole explained the city has seen considerable growth over the last few decades. In the 2000s, Ellsworth grew by 19%. That’s resulted in a tight rental housing market, he said.
Reflecting tight inventory, Ellsworth has permitted more rental/lease unit construction over the past 20 months than the previous eight years combined, said Cole. The market is expected to grow, especially with The Jackson Laboratory’s development of a mouse production facility, expected to employ 350.
“I don’t think we’ve even baked the Jackson Lab development into the cake yet,” Cole said. “So we’ll have future needs.”
