Stonewall Kitchen voluntarily recalls mislabeled basil product

Stonewall Kitchen is voluntarily recalling a small number of jars of its Basil Pesto Aioli, mislabeled as Basil Pesto. The aioli contains egg, which can be an allergen for some people, but that information is not included on the mislabeled jars.
York-based Stonewall Kitchen announced Monday that it initiated a voluntary recall of a limited amount of recently shipped basil pesto aioli jars due to mislabeling and an undeclared presence of egg allergens.
“We began shipping this product on Monday, April 23, and we have determined that this error was limited to no more than 732 units which were shipped to 38 different wholesale retailers, all of whom have been contacted,” Stonewall Kitchen stated in a news release announcing the recall.
The company stated some of its 10.25-ounce jars of basil pesto aioli with a “use by” freshness date of September 28, 2019, were mislabeled as “basil pesto” on a “small portion” of its most recent production run. Basil pesto aioli contains egg allergens, whereas basil pesto does not, the company stated.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the company stated. “The case pack is correctly labeled as Basil Pesto Aioli, it is the individual units which may have the incorrect label (Basil Pesto) on the jar.”
Stonewall Kitchen said so far it has received any complaints about these products, and no injuries or illnesses have been reported. The company added that this voluntary recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Stonewall Kitchen advises consumers that might have purchased the recalled product to discontinue its use and discard it immediately.
