Portland to get its first hostel this summer

Portland will soon be getting its first hostel, when Heather Loeber opens her four-story 12-room Black Elephant Hostel at Hampshire and Newbury streets early this summer.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Loeber’s hostel will be able to accommodate 54 guests, with a bunk costing $40/night and a double room $90/night. It will be open to people of all ages and is expected to open sometime in June.

Robert Witkowski, creative director and media relations manager for Visit Portland, told the newspaper the hostel will fill a niche for “young, budget-conscious travelers looking to experience life as a local.”

The new Portland hostel will join Pine Ellis Lodging in Andover, Deer Isle Hostel on Deer Isle, Appalachian Trail Lodge in Millinocket and The Hostel@Acorn By The Sea in Brooksville, according to the Maine Office of Tourism’s website visitmaine.com
