Loring Industries in line for more bus rehab work

Loring Industries, located at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, has landed another bus refurbishing contract involving work similar to the $20 million bus renovation project for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority that will be completed this summer.

Loring Development Authority President Carl Flora told The County the new bus contract would provide a “steady flow of work” and involves refurbishing buses that were leased or are trade-ins.

Flora also said the Loring Development Authority also is working out details on a contract for Loring Industries and the Maine Military Authority that would involve working on howitzers.

Loring Industries LLC was established in 2015 to assist and further the goals of the state of Maine to bring and expand business in the northernmost region of the state, according to its website. It is in pursuit of commercial markets and Department of Defense customers that are in need of its core competencies: Fleet Life-Cycle Management, Refurbishment and Overhaul Services.

According to an April 2017 news release, Loring Industries initially occupied part of a 40,000-square-foot building adjacent to facilities occupied by Maine Military Authority. The company first completed

and delivered the first of six buses overhauled for two significant fixed route transit

operators in Maine; and has been providing parts, components and logistical support for MMA’s project with Boston’s MBTA for the refurbishment of MBTA’s fleet of specialized buses.

The former base, now called the Loring Commerce Center, has evolved into a busy commercial, industrial and aviation park that is home to 25 new employers and 1,200 employees, according to its website

“With over 3,800 acres of developed area Loring has the capacity to support new business development with a variety of existing modern and practical buildings and developable sites supported by high-capacity municipal utility infrastructure and a newly constructed dark fiber network,” its website stated.
