Blue Hill marine division building bridges for NYC skyscrapers
The marine division of Hewes & Co. in Blue Hill is constructing the hard-maple cladding for an 88-foot steel-frame bridge that will connect luxury-condominium skyscrapers on Riverside Drive in Manhattan.
The Ellsworth American reported the bridges are made with steel and maple. “It is very much like one of my boat projects,” Gardner Pickering, who leads Hewes’ marine division, told the newspaper.
Hewes will also start construction on a spiral staircase for one of the bridges.
New York design firm Jaroff Design found Hewes for the job through Maine Built Boats. Pickering told the paper that another Maine company, Newport Industrial Fabrication, constructed the steel frame.
According to its website, the skyscrapers, collectively called Waterline Square, are located between Hudson River Park and Central Park. Each of the three buildings is designed by a different architectural firm — Viñoly, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, and Richard Meier and Partners.
