UNE hires former UConn dean to lead College of Pharmacy

He will start Aug. 1.
McCarthy takes over from interim dean Karen Houseknecht and longtime leader Gayle Brazeau, who was named dean in 2010, a year after the college welcomed its first class. Brazeau, who was a 2013 Mainebiz Next honoree, was named dean of the Marshall University School of Pharmacy, effective May 12.
McCarthy served as dean of the UConn pharmacy college from 2003-13. He also held faculty positions at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Northeastern University and Boston University. McCarthy earned his B.S. in pharmacy, M.S. in hospital pharmacy and Ph.D. in law, policy and society at Northeastern University.
“Dr. McCarthy’s vast experience and leadership will be incredibly valuable as we move the UNE College of Pharmacy into the future,” said UNE President James Herbert. “He helped to build one of the most impressive pharmacy programs in the nation, and there is no one better equipped to help UNE face the challenges and opportunities of this rapidly evolving industry.”
UNE, which has more than 13,700 students and campuses in Biddeford and Portland, as well as Tangier, Morocco, is Maine’s largest private university. It has Maine’s only Maine’s only medical and dental colleges and has 315 students enrolled in its College of Pharmacy.
