Advice for startups and new ventures on tap at Mainebiz ‘Executive Insights’ forum

Courtesy / Forager David Stone, founder of Forager, and CashStar, joins the panel to share 10 Best Ideas for New Ventures and Entrepreneurs at the New Ventures Forum on June 14.

Mainebiz will host an innovative new take on its “Executive Insights” series next month. The forum will include workshops featuring Maine business leaders and a keynote from the highly regarded author of “The Startup Equation,” Ja-Nae Duane.

“Our goal is to provide insight and resources to the Maine startup and entrepreneur business community designed to help and inspire entrepreneurs who want to start up, grow and be successful in business.” said Donna Brassard, Mainebiz publisher.

The forum will be held Thursday, June 14, from 11:30 a.m to 6 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in South Portland. Tickets are $59 and include a keynote lunch, several workshop sessions, a panel discussion with five Maine CEOs on the 10 Best Ideas for New Ventures, and a networking reception.

Anyone who registers by June 11 will be eligible to win a copy of Duane's book, "The Startup Equation.” Winners will be notified upon check-in. Ja-Nae Duane will be available for book signing as well. Books will also be available for purchase at this time.

Workshops cover full range of topics, from finance to logistics of starting or expanding a business.

Following the keynote, attendees will have choice of various hour-long workshops at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Here’s the full breakdown of sessions and speakers:

Workshop Session I (choose one)

1. “Other people’s money: A guide to fundraising, crowdsourcing, and finding equity capital to start or expand your business.” Speakers are Sandra Stone, Maine Angels; John Burns, Maine Venture Fund; and Joe Migliaccio, MTI

2.” Partnerships, LLCs and ESOPs, oh my: What’s the best way to set up your company?” Speakers are Andrea Suter, Pierce Atwood; and Matthew Pore, Baker Newman Noyes.

3. “Mine. Mine. Mine: How to protect your ideas with patents and trademarks,” presented by Matt Stein, Pierce Atwood.

Workshop Session II (choose one)

1. “You can’t do it yourself: Innovative ways to recruit and hiring rules to keep you out of trouble.” Speakers are Katy Rand, Pierce Atwood; and Ed McKersie, Pro Search Inc and Live and Work in Maine.

2. “Show me the money: What investors and banks looking for.” Speakers are Steve Gurin, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust; and Diane Sturgeon, U.S. Small Business Administration

3. “To market, to market: What you need to know about logistics, shipping, and exports.” Speakers are Wade Merritt, Maine International Trade Center; Derek Volk, Volk Packaging; and Drew Graham, Ship-Right Solutions.

Panel discussion: 10 Best Ideas for New Ventures

A panel discussion with Maine CEOs will follow from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Speakers will include Sean Sullivan, Maine Brewers Guild; Becky McKinnell, iBec Creative; Bill Keleher, Kennebec River Biosciences; Allison Lakin, Lakin's Gorges Cheese, LLC; and David Stone, Forager. The panel will be moderated by Betsy Biemann of CEI.

The day will be capped off with time for networking during a reception from 4:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.
