Hancock County will consider zoning change to accommodate solar farm

Energy development company Next Phase Energy Services LLC has submitted a petition to the Land Use Planning Commission to change the zoning of a Hancock County property in order to establish a 100-megawatt solar farm.

The Bangor Daily News reported the requested rezoning, from a general classification to commercial, for more than 700 acres of blueberry fields in Maine’s Unorganized Territory on land owned by forestry company Elliott Jordan & Son Inc.

Dave Fowler, head of Next Phase Energy Services, told the BDN the proposed solar farm, called Three Rivers Solar, is a partnership between his firm and Elliott Jordan & Son. Pending zoning approval and permitting, they would bring in a partner to provide capital investment for developing the site, which would be in 2020, Fowler said.

Cianbro Corp. currently holds the record for the largest solar energy facility in Maine and within the jurisdiction of ISO New England, which keeps electricity flowing across the six-state New England region. The company's Pittsfield Solar Project consists of 40,300 solar panels erected on 57 acres of a 115-acre parcel owned by Cianbro off Route 2 in Pittsfield.
