Elsmere opens second location in Deering neighborhood

South Portland's Elsemere BBQ and Wood Grill has opened a second location in the former Siano's Pizza building on Stevens Avenue in Portland.

The second location of South Portland’s Elsmere BBQ and Wood Grill opened Tuesday at 476 Stevens Ave. in Portland’s Deering Center.

Owners Adam Powers and Jeremy Rush bought the former Siano’s Pizza in December for $1.15 million.

The pair opened the South Portland Elsmere at 448 Cottage Road in 2013 in a former auto repair garage.

The new location is 4,091 square feet, and has on-site parking and an outdoor patio.

Powers, in a news release, said that the second Elsmere “had to be the right place.”

"We weren't looking to expand just to expand,” he said. “We looked in all the surrounding towns — Yarmouth, Freeport, Brunswick, Gorham, Scarborough. Where we are, in Deering Center, used to be its own little village, so there's a lot of walk-in traffic there."

He told Mainebiz in February that the restaurant is community-oriented. "We have a bit of a different business model than a lot of the restaurants around here, because we're not tourist-oriented.”

The menu will be the same, according to new news release, including wood-fired grill and smoker meats and seafood, as well as vegetarian and vegan selections.

The move is part of an economic surge in the neighborhood. Ice It! Bakery and Cafe, of Yarmouth, opened a second location a block from the new Elsmere in a new mixed-use building last month.
