Trek Across Maine starts today with 1,500 cyclists

Trek Across Maine, the American Lung Association's largest fundraising event, kicked off today from Sunday River in Newry.

Some 1,500 cyclists will cover 180 miles, ending in Belfast on Sunday.

Since 1985, the annual fundraising ride has raised $24 million for the American Lung Association, helping fund research, education and advocacy.

Today’s ride will take cyclists from Sunday River to the University of Maine at Farmington. Saturday’s leg goes from Farmington to Colby College, in Waterville.

Sunday’s ride will depart Colby and pass through Watermelon Hill in Palermo, where for the past eight years Leo and Priscilla Smith have handed out watermelon cantaloupe and water to honor their late daughter. Cyclists will start arriving at Steamboat Landing in Belfast by 11 a.m.
